Burnout Signs Nobody Warns You About (Explained by Ducks)

Most people picture burnout as a dramatic crash. For a lot of ducks it is quieter than that. It is crackers on the kitchen floor. It is rereading the same email four times. It is feeling guilty for resting and still being tired after resting.

What is burnout?

The World Health Organization describes burnout as a result of chronic workplace stress that hasn't been successfully managed. It is usually described through three things: exhaustion, feeling mentally distant or cynical about the thing draining you, and a sense that you are not getting anywhere any more.

In real life, burnout doesn't only come from paid work. Caring for someone, parenting, studying, running a small business, or simply masking all day can drain the same tank.

The burnout signs nobody warns you about

  • Tired in a way sleep doesn't fix. Eight hours. Still tired.
  • Everything feels like a lot. Replying to a text. Booking a dentist. Choosing a sandwich.
  • Your fuse gets shorter. Small things feel huge, then you feel bad for reacting.
  • You stop enjoying things you used to love. Hobbies start to feel like another job.
  • You get ill more. Colds hang around. Your body keeps sending notes.
  • Brain fog. Walking into rooms and forgetting why. Losing words mid-sentence.
  • Self-improvement becomes another pressure. The 5am routine, the cold plunge, the streaks. Day five, streak gone, app shows a sad face.
  • You look fine. Which is why it can go on for so long. (See functional freeze.)

Brain say
“Could be learning a language.”
“You’re wasting your potential.”
Even rest has a score now.

Burnout vs stress

A simple way to think about it: stress is too much. Burnout is not enough left. Stress often feels urgent and wired. Burnout feels empty and flat.

Gentle ways to start recovering from burnout

  1. Name it. "I'm burnt out" is not dramatic. It is information.
  2. Find the leak. What is taking the most and giving back the least? You may not be able to fix it today, but knowing it helps.
  3. Stop optimising your recovery. Rest doesn't need a score. Duck is not a project.
  4. Say one no this week. Just one.
  5. Keep reminders where you'll see them. On the fridge, on the desk, in your bag. Our Running On Empty affirmation cards were written for exactly this: 52 cards for burnt-out brains, with a Wise Frog reflection on the back of each and one limited edition holographic card.
  6. Get support. A GP, a manager, a friend. Burnout is easier to climb out of with a hand.

Wise Frog says
“Duck is not a project.”
“Duck was whole before the routine.”

Burnout FAQ

How long does burnout take to recover from?

It depends on how long you have been running on empty and whether the cause changes. Many people notice small improvements within weeks once the pressure eases, with fuller recovery taking longer.

Can you have burnout without a job?

Yes. Parents, carers, students and people who spend all day masking can all burn out.

What do you buy someone who is burnt out?

Something that asks nothing of them. We wrote a whole guide: gifts for someone who is having a hard time.

Still unoptimised. Still a good duck.
